Chinese Herbal Medicine

It is very common in Chinese Medicine to supplement the treatments received in a session by prescribing herbal remedies. Herbs are most often administered in tablet form, which include straightforward traditional formulas, or in powdered form, which is the customizable way to make a unique formula specific to the individuals health needs. Herbs are usually taken alone either a half hour before or after meals, as prescribed. Powdered herbs are dissolved into hot water and are drunk like a tea.

Herbs have a cumulative effect on the body, so patient compliance is key to their success. One may expect to be on herbs for a few weeks before noticing their effects in some cases. This is because the herbs are working to unlock the underlying pattern , or root, behind the symptom being treated. Once the disharmony is corrected the symptoms will lose it’s foothold. The body didn’t get that way overnight, so, chances are, it’s going to take a little while to correct the problem! When taken consistently and on a regular basis, herbal medicine can tremendously boost the effectiveness of treatment by approaching the issue from all possible sides. Most herbal formulations can be taken safely side by side with other prescribed medications but never discontinue the use of any medication without first consulting your doctor. Always express your concern about interaction or side effects with both your doctor and your herbalist. One can never be too informed!
